Graham McDonald Harris passed away peacefully in August 2025, aged 87, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in Melbourne on 29 August 1937, Graham lived a life marked by service, conviction, and compassion.
A proud alumnus of Scotch College and a law graduate from the University of Melbourne, Graham was called to the Victorian Bar in 1961. He devoted his legal career to family law, guiding countless families through times of hardship with empathy, clarity, and care. His dedication extended beyond the courtroom, as he mentored generations of junior barristers with patience and generosity, shaping the future of the profession he so loved.
A lifelong Liberal, Graham’s passion for politics ran deep. Long before—and well beyond—his own time in Parliament, he was an active and respected figure within the party. In the turbulent days of 1975, he served as Tony Staley’s Electoral Chair during the pivotal federal campaign that followed the dismissal of the Whitlam Government. He remained a trusted advisor, strategist, and fundraiser throughout his life, lending his wisdom and steady hand to causes and colleagues he believed in.
In 1980, Graham was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Liberal member for Chisholm, serving until 1983. During the Fraser Government, he contributed to the Defence Committee under Defence Minister Jim Killen, and brought his legal acumen to the Law and Government, and Health and Welfare Committees—chairing the latter from 1982. His voice was a thoughtful and passionate one in debates on education reform, consumer protection, and family support services.
Graham also served his country in uniform. A committed naval reservist from 1965, he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1974 and Commander in 1985. From 1989 to 1993, he served with distinction as Director of Naval Intelligence (Reserves) in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve. His leadership extended to the Navy League, which he guided at both state and national levels, always championing Australia’s maritime strength and heritage.
Beyond law, politics, and defence, Graham played a central role in the growth and development of the family business over more than 60 years. He was initially appointed an Alternate Director to Kilmour Investments in 1961 before becoming a Director in 1973. In 1990 he succeeded to Chairman, a position he held for 38 years before stepping down in 2018.
He was a Director of AKD from 1992 until his retirement in June 2025 and Chairman from 2015 to 2023 where he steered the company through a period of transformative growth. Under his stewardship, AKD expanded across Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland, becoming Australia’s largest timber milling and processing company. He was particularly proud of the company’s commitment to sustainability and good governance—principles that were close to his heart.
Graham’s passions were as broad as his achievements. A lifelong member of the Melbourne Cricket Club, he was a self-confessed cricket tragic, never missing a Boxing Day Test. An equally devoted Essendon supporter, he rarely missed a Grand Final, always supporting from the stands with a smile.
But above all else, Graham’s greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Sandra, whose love and partnership were his foundation. Together they raised three sons—Andrew, James, and Alastair—who, along with their families, carry forward his values and his warmth. Graham leaves behind fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed to be part of a life so full of love, humour, and unwavering support.
Graham’s principled leadership, generous spirit, and deep kindness enriched every life he touched. His legacy lives on not only in his many public contributions, but in the quiet strength and warmth he gave to those around him. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered.
